Alocasia gageana albo variegata has large, heart-shaped leaves with a glossy surface. The marbling of the leaves is striking and consists of deep green and white to cream-coloured speckles. A pronounced ribbed structure gives the leaves additional volume.

Leaf structure:

This variety is rare and often only available in specialised nurseries. It is also known as ‘small-leaved elephant ears’, which refers to the characteristic shape of its leaves. The colour of the marbling can vary and appear more intense depending on the intensity of the light.

Care instructions:

Well-drained soil is crucial for growth. A mixture of high-quality potting soil, perlite and orchid bark ensures adequate drainage and air circulation. It is important that the soil dries out slightly between waterings to prevent root rot. This plant requires higher humidity, which can be achieved by regular spraying or placing it on a gravel bed filled with water.

Optimal conditions:

Alocasia gageana prefers bright, indirect light, as direct sunlight can lead to leaf burn. Ideal temperatures are between 20 °C and 30 °C, whereby cold draughts and extreme temperature fluctuations should be avoided. A humidity of at least 60 % is important to ensure the health of the plant.

Fertilise:

During the growing season from spring to autumn, Alocasia gageana should be fertilised every 4-6 weeks with a liquid, balanced fertiliser, such as 20-20-20. In winter, fertilisation can be reduced to every 8-10 weeks or stopped altogether, as nutrient uptake decreases during this time.

Origin:

Alocasia gageana originates from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia, where it often grows in moist, shady environments. These plants belong to the Aroid family, which is known for its characteristic leaf shapes and colours. In nature, they often grow epiphytically and benefit from the humidity in their environment.
